A Brief History of the Forklift

Nov 01, 2022

The first iteration of the modern forklift was far different than it is today and it originally went by the name of the industrial truck. According to Case Western Reserve University, the ELWELL PARKER ELECTRIC CO. developed the industrial truck in 1906 to help handle and transport industrial materials. Let's take a closer look at the history of the forklift and how it's changed over time.

The Beginning

Invented in 1906 by William G. Tucker, the first industrial truck was an electric vehicle designed to move heavy materials around factories. The design was based on battery-powered forklifts that had been used in England since 1887.

Forklifts first became widely used during World War I when factories needed a way to move heavy materials and supplies quickly. To do so, they relied on forklift services and professionals who knew how to operate these machines. Forklifts proved so useful during the war that their popularity skyrocketed in the years that followed.

Forklifts Go Electric

In 1924, Clark Equipment Company introduced the first electric-powered forklift. This machine was far more powerful than its predecessors and could lift heavier loads. It quickly became the forklift service of choice for factories and warehouses across the country.

Forklifts Today

Forklifts have come a long way since they were first invented over a hundred years ago. Today, many different types of forklifts are available to suit any business's needs. From electric to diesel-powered, there's a forklift out there for every job. Forklifts are now essential equipment in many different industries.

Forklifts have profoundly impacted the world of commerce. Thanks to these machines, factories and warehouses can operate at much higher speeds and levels of efficiency. Forklift service has made it possible to move more goods in less time, which has helped spur economic growth worldwide.

Forklifts have come a long way since they were first invented, but there is still room for improvement. Forklift manufacturers are always working to develop new technologies to make these machines and forklift services even more efficient and effective.
